Short CV

Thanasis Zisis is currently a Professor in the area of Micromechanics of Deformable Solids and Contact Mechanics at the National Technical University of Athens at the School of Applied Mathematics and Physical Science, Division of Mechanics.

Dr. Zisis is a graduate of the School of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering – NTUA (1996-2001). From 2001 until 2005 he worked as a Research Assistant and then as a Research Associate at the Division of Micromechanics of Materials of the Engineering Department at the University of Cambridge. At 2005 he was awarded the Ph.D. degree. His research project during the Ph.D. degree falls in the area of Contact Mechanics of Microstructured Solids. The Ph.D. was fully funded by the EPSRC and the National Science Foundation.

Upon completion of his Ph.D., Thanasis returned to Greece and worked as a Research Associate at the Laboratory of Computer-Aided Materials Processing-Rheology and Design for Polymers and Composites at the School of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering, NTUA (CAMP R&D). He also worked as a Research Associate at the Institute of Nuclear Technology and Radiation Protection at the National Centre of Scientific Research-Demokritos (Greece) in the field of nuclear engineering.

At the beginning of 2008, he was appointed the position of the Adjunct Lecturer at the Department of Civil Engineering and at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Thessaly where he taught for a number of years the undergraduate courses of the Mechanics of Non-deformable Solids (Engineering Mechanics I) and the Mechanics of Deformable Solids (Engineering Mechanics II). He also taught the post graduate course of “Advanced Mechanics of Materials” at the Department of Civil Engineering. At the University of Thessaly he worked as a Research Associate at the Laboratory of Strength of Materials and Micromechanics and the Laboratory of Mechanics and Strength of Materials on the area of Computational Mechanics.

At 2012 he was elected Assistant Professor at the National Technical University of Athens at the School of Applied Mathematics and Physical Science, Division of Mechanics. At 2012, he also started cooperating with the Unit of Computational Fracture Mechanics and Dynamics in NTUA where he worked on Contact Problems of Microstructured Materials.

From March 2014 until August 2014 he worked as a Marie Currie Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Solid and Structural Mechanics Group at the University of Trento, Italy.

In August 2014, he was appointed the position of Assistant Professor in the area of Micromechanics of Materials at NTUA and in 2019 he was appointed the position of the Associate Professor in the area of Micromechanics of Deformable Solids and Contact Mechanics at the National Technical University of Athens at the School of Applied Mathematics and Physical Science, Division of Mechanics. In 2024 he was appointed the position of Professor.

He has published more than 40 papers in refereed journals, while he participated in funded projects and has issued one patent.
