Panos Gourgiotis is currently an Associate Professor of Solid Mechanics at the National Technical University of Athens at the School of Applied Mathematics and Physical Sciences, Division of Mechanics.

Dr Gourgiotis has been an Associate Professor at the Dept. of Civil Engineering at the University of Thessaly (UTH) (2020-2023) and the Director of Micromechanics Lab at UTH (2021-2023). He was an Assistant Professor in Applied Mechanics at the Department of Engineering at Durham University, UK (2016 - 2020) and a Marie Curie experienced researcher at the University of Trento, Italy (2012 – 2016). He has also worked as a post-doctoral researcher in basic research programs at NTUA (2009- 2012).

He holds a Civil Engineering diploma from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), an MSc degree in “Analysis and Design of Earthquake Resistant Structures” and a PhD in Applied Mechanics from the Mechanics Division at NTUA.

His research interests fall in the area of micromechanics of materials. Dr Gourgiotis has conducted research in the areas of fracture and contact mechanics, dislocations, and wave propagation in solids. A significant amount of his research has been focused in the growing field of generalized continuum theories. The common theoretical thread linking his research work is the question on how the microstructural morphology affects the macroscopical behaviour of heterogeneous materials. Dr Gourgiotis is an expert in boundary integral techniques and advanced analytical methods. He has published more than 40 research articles in peer reviewed magazines and international conferences and organised two symposia within the European Solid Mechanics Conferences (2015 & 2022). He is in the editorial board of Journal of Mechanics of Materials and Structures.
