Short CV

Antonios Giannakopoulos is a Professor at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), at the School of Applied Mathematics and Physical Sciences, at the Division of Mechanics, in the area of elasticity and stability.

A. Giannakopoulos is a graduate of the School of Civil Engineering in NTUA (1977-1983). In 1987 he obtained the MSc in Solid Mechanics and the MSc in Applied Mathematics. In 1989 he obtained the Ph.D. in the area of Solids Mechanics from Brown University. In 1993 he was entitled as Docent at the Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden.

In 1988, he was appointed the position of the Assistant Professor at the Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden, at the Department of Solid Mechanics and in 1991 he was appointed the position of the Associate Professor at the same university, were he served until 1996. From 1995 until 1997 he served as a visiting Professor at MIT, at the Department of Material Science and Engineering. From 1997 until 2001, he worked as a Senior Researcher at MIT. From 2001 until 2006, he held the position of the Associate Professor at the University of Thessaly, at the School of Civil Engineering, and in 2006 he was appointed the position of the Professor at the same School (2006-2016). In 2016 A. Giannakopoulos was appointed the position of the Professor at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), at the School of Applied Mathematics and Physical Sciences, at the Division of Mechanics, at the area of elasticity and stability.

A. Giannakopoulos has served as a reviewer in a number of scientific journals and has also served as Associate Editor for the scientific journals Acta Materialia and Scripta Materialia, (1998-2001) and as a member of the Editorial Board for International Journal of Structural Integrity (2009). He is a member of the European Structural Integrity Society and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

He has published more than 140 scientific papers in refereed journals, while he participated in more than 9 funded projects and has issued more than 10 patents.
