 Short CV

Antoniou Alexandros is an Assistant Professor of "Engineering of Composite Materials" at the National Technical University of Athens, in the School of Applied Mathematics and Physical Sciences, in the Department of Engineering. Mr. Antoniou obtained his first degree from the University of Patras - School of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering, where he was also awarded a PhD in 2009. His dissertation entitled "Progressive damage in multidirectional laminates made of composite materials; its effect on guided wave propagation" was carried out in the framework of research projects and funding from the European Union. From 2009 to 2022 he worked at the Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy Systems (IWES) in Germany, in the field of applied research on structural integrity testing, design and fabrication of Wind Turbine Blades. There, he was a founding member of the accredited composite materials strength laboratory, where he was technical head from 2015 to 2021. In 2021-2022 he was heading the research group "Modelling of Polymers and Composites".

His scientific interest includes the following fields:
  • Design-Modelling of structures with composite materials
  • Experimental mechanics with emphasis on the characterization of static and fatigue behaviour of polymers and composite structures
  • Micromechanical modelling of composites
  • Polymerisation modelling (Curing Kinetics)
  • Effect of defects on the structural behaviour of structural elements
  • Monitoring of structural integrity of structures by acoustic emission
He has published his research activity in more than 30 articles in peer-reviewed international journals and conferences and holds 3 granted patents. He is a reviewer in more than 5 international journals and is on the list of scientific experts/reviewers of the European Union for the evaluation of EUREKA research proposals. He has a wide network of collaborations with European universities (DTU, TU Delft, TU Berlin etc.) and extensive experience in the formulation, supervision and evaluation of postgraduate theses, at Masters and PhD level.

Mr. Antoniou has extensive industrial technical experience (track record) in the field of:
  • certification of properties of composite materials (certification DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025)
  • design, construction and destructive and non-destructive testing with emphasis on adhesive joints
  • due diligence, testing and testing with respect to durability, testing and durability testing, including testing and durability testing
  • inspections & root cause analysis
He is a member of technical industry associations and committees such as the Technical Chamber of Greece. He participated in international committees such as the Rotorblatt Allianz and the Bundesverband WindEnergie in Germany in matters of material certification and repair of wind turbine blades.
